Triyuginarayan Temple Marriage Procedure
As you imagine your wedding day with your eyes closed, what do you see? A huge banquet hall with 300-500 guests you have met twice in your life? A checklist of rituals hurried through because the next couple is waiting out? Or something less exuberant. Something really worth.
If you felt even a slight pull towards that second image keep reading. We want to introduce you to a place that will change the way you think about your wedding. It’s called Triyuginarayan Temple. Trust us, once you know the story behind it, you’ll understand why couples from all over the country are making their way up the Himalayas to say their vows here.

Why Is Triyuginarayan Temple Special?
There’s something about this place that makes it different from every other wedding venue in India: it’s not technically a venue. Triyuginarayan is a sacred Hindu temple tucked away in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, at 1,980 meters. A quiet, unhurried village surrounds it, away from city noise.
But what’s really cool about this place is that it’s where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married. Did you know that the sacred fire was lit during their divine wedding, called the Akhand Dhuni? Ever since, it hasn’t stopped burning. I’m not being metaphorical. It’s actually burning. Hundreds of years.
You do saat pheras around the same fire at Triyuginarayan. Take a second to think about that. I don’t think that’s a wedding backdrop. That’s a gift.
But what makes it truly extraordinary is this: this is believed to be the exact spot where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married. And if that wasn’t enough the sacred fire, called the Akhand Dhuni, that was lit during their divine wedding? It is said to have been burning ever since, without intermission. Not in metaphor. Actually burning. Years.
At Triyuginarayan you do your saat pheras around the same fire. Think on that for a moment. That’s not a wedding backdrop. That’s an inheritance.
How Do You Get There?
OK. Now for the nitty gritty. Triyuginarayan is in the mountains, so the journey is part of the experience and you should plan for it accordingly.
By Air The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun at a distance of about 240 km. From there, you’ll go by road.
By Train : If you are a train person then the nearest major train stations are Haridwar and Rishikesh. Both have good connectivity with most of the Indian cities.
By Road: Most scenic way. The proposed itinerary will be like this Rishikesh > Rudraprayag > Sonprayag > Triyuginarayan Depending on the season and the condition of the roads, the last few kilometers to the village may involve using a local vehicle or a short walk.

Why it matters & the story they don’t tell you
Most destination wedding planners will hit you with facts. We want to do something different, and really tell you what makes this place feel the way it does.” Triyuginarayan isn’t a display, not a put-on, not for Instagram. It is a traditional Himalayan Village with a temple which has centuries of belief in its stones. The air is scented with incense and pine. The priests here have been married for generation. And that fire that quietly burns at the centre of it all, Akhand Dhuni.
“It felt real,” couples married here say again and again. Not produced real, not acted real. In an industry where it’s all about optics these days, it’s so nice to see a place that just doesn’t care about any of that. It cares only about the sanctity of what you’re going to do.
Triyuginarayan Temple Marriage Procedure
So how does a wedding here exactly work? Here’s the low down:
Step 1 – Register and Book
First of all you need to get yourself registered with the local temple authority, the Tirtha Purohit Samiti. Registration fee is approx. ₹ 1,100. This is also when you’ll secure your date and time slot. Don’t put off this step – slots fill up quickly in peak season (more on that below).
Step 2 – Documents Required
Nothing bureaucratic is ever fun but this is easy. Do carry your Aadhaar cards or passport, address proof and some passport size photographs. You will also have to declare your intention to register the marriage with the temple committee.
Step 3 – Setup and Arrival
Local priests will help you with the mandap setup, near the temple, when you reach there. They stock the puja samagri and ritual items for you so that you don’t have to lug anything up from the city.
Step 4 – The ceremony itself
That is the nub of it. Traditional Hindu wedding ceremony: Ganesh puja to commence, kanyadaan, saat pheras around the Akhand Dhuni, sindoor and mangalsutra. The whole ritual usually takes about 45-60 minutes, the whole ceremony including preparations takes more like 2-3 hours.
Step 5 – Your Certificate
After the ceremony the temple gives you a hand-written certificate of marriage. This is a legal document that you can use for legal registration purposes.
How Many Guests Can Attend in Triyuginarayan Temple?
This is where a lot of couples need to reset expectations and honestly, once you do, you’ll probably feel a relief. Triyuginarayan is not a major wedding destination. The guest number is usually around 50 people. During the actual rituals inside the temple it is even more intimate closer to 10 to 15 people from your closest family.
Now, we know some of you are thinking. “But I have 80 in my family alone. Smart couples do this: the main rituals at the temple with immediate family and then party with the larger group at a nearby resort or hotel near Triyuginrayan Temple. You have the sacred ceremony and the party in only two different places. It brings a sense of closeness and significance to the temple ceremony, but it also provides everyone with an opportunity to unite.
Rules to Keep in Mind – Please Read This Section
The temple authority runs a traditional, respectful space and they do mean it. Here’s what you need to know before you go:
Only Hindu rituals are conducted here. If you’re planning an interfaith or civil ceremony, this isn’t the right venue but for Hindu couples, it’s absolutely perfect.
- Dress modestly. This is a place of worship first. Traditional attire is expected, and the priests and temple staff will appreciate it.
- No loud music, no DJs inside the temple premises. The ceremony is quiet, devotional, and should stay that way.
- Multiple weddings can happen on the same day, so don’t expect to have the temple entirely to yourself. Plan your timing accordingly and arrive a little early to settle in.
- Photography and videography are allowed, so yes, your wedding photographer can capture the whole thing. (And they should – it’s going to be stunning.)
